The perfect starting point for anyone new to the software, our Affinity Essentials course covers all the fundamentals, guiding you through each studio space with visually driven projects to get you comfortable working in the app.

In this first lesson, you’ll get a tour of the UI and the different studios, highlighting key tools and functionality before diving into a hands-on activity using artwork from Brazilian lettering artist Lebassis.

Lesson objectives

By the end of the lesson, you’ll:

  • know your way around Affinity’s UI
  • understand each studio and what to use it for
  • be able to create and set up a new document
  • know how to import an existing file and export your work
  • understand the Layers Panel and how to order, group, and manage layers
  • know how to create vector curves using the Pencil Tool
  • be ready to jump into the next lessons, which cover various workflows in more detail

Lesson resources

Before you begin, make sure you’ve downloaded Affinity and logged in using your Canva ID. You’ll also want to download the Lesson 1 source file to follow along.
